This essay disputes the common view of Ricarte and other Filipino Japanophiles as mere traitors who collaborated with an invading enemy force. It shows that the politics of Filipinos Japanophiles, while not lacking opportunists in their own ranks, was actually an intrinsic part of deep-seated anti-oligarchal politics among the Filipino masses which was incomprehensible to the Japanese who treated Ricarte and the Japanophiles simply as expedient political tools. The discussion also sheds light on little known coup d'etat attempts by Japanophiles against the Japanese-sponsored government during the war. These plans were conceived with the blessings of some Japanese officers. Japanese sponsored political organizations during the war such as the KALIBAPI and the MAKAPILI were far more complex than just organizations of Filipino puppets and collaborators. They were, in more ways than one, responses of the Japanese Military Administration to politically destabilizing activities of Filipino Japanophiles."
