Esmerian was a French national who was a young bank employee in Saigon until he was called to military service in 1939. He fought in the little-known Thai-French Indochina War of 1940, winning the Croix the Guerre for courage under fire. When the Japanese took Saigon in mid-1941, he was placed on the ship Marechal Foch which arrived in Mania just prior to the outbreak of war. Esmerian was considered an enemy alien by the Japanese, since he remained loyal to the French resistance government of Charles de Gaulle rather than to the Vichy government under Germany. He was thus interned in Santo Tomas – one of only seven Frenchmen in the camp. The memoir "Journal d'Extreme-Orient : 1940-1945," written in French, provides a perspective of the war and Santo Tomas that is different from the more numerous American memoirs. - Prof. Ricardo T.
