The 57th Infantry was a professional unit composed of Filipino soldiers and American officers, a part of the regular US Army. Being one of MacArthur's strongest units on Bataan, it was assigned the mission of holding the Abucay line at its most critical point: the lowland area flanking the lone road. Olson had served with the regiment since October 1939 and knew most of the officers and men; he was regimental adjutant from October 1941 until the fall of Bataan, and thus kept the regiment's records as best he could. This monograph, highly detailed from a professional military officer's point of view, details the terrain, organization of the line, the Japanese attack and USAFFE counterattack; eventual withdrawal when another sector of the line was outflanked. Olson later wrote the definitive regimental history of his unit, the 57th Infantry (Philippine Scouts), and also an authoritative account of the Camp O'Donnell POW (American) experience. He also wrote a novel on the war in the Philippines, and edited a volume on the Philippine Scouts. He remains active in keeping the legacy of the Philippine Scouts alive. - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose
