(t.p.)Language/Translation Info: EnglishSummary: Military monograph dealing with the operations and movements of the 31st Infantry Regiment, U.S. Army, on Luzon and Bataan during the Philippine defense campaign, 1941-1942. Author was Regimental S-4, or logistics staff officer; as such this monograph details the supply side of the 31st Infantry’s operations. Mead in particular cites problems in lack of transport (all available vehicles were used, including buses, taxicabs and others), although they had two modern jeeps. Although the infantrymen had the new M1 Garand rifle, the regiment’s mortars had no ammunition and were thus useless. Discusses supply, fuel, equipment shortages and problems, and criticizes MacArthur’s delayed decision to shift to War Plan Orange, noting that many supplies were lost because of the lateness of the order to move to Bataan. Author also decries being given empty promises, which led to loss of morale. - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose
