Fr. Hurley, an American Jesuit, recounts his trials and tribulations during the war and Japanese occupation striving to protect his priests, church property, and students. When the war broke out, the Ateneo de Manila campus was used by reservist Ateneo students to train; the campus was also used as a refuge for those who could not return to their hometowns. The Japanese attempted to take over Jesuit property and also attempted to force the church to collaborate, but Fr. Hurley and many of the Jesuits and their students resisted the Japanese. Fr. Hurley tried to help prisoners of war and the internees in Santo Tomas while steadfastly refusing to toe the Japanese propaganda line. Eventually, he was interrogated by the Japanese and church property was taken over. Fr. Hurley and other religious leaders were interned in Santo Tomas 1944. In this humble but honest memoir, Fr. Hurley recounts those trying years and acknowledges the heroism and sacrifice of many Jesuits and Ateneo students. He also discusses the order’s relief activities after the war, its losses and his attempt to recover them after the war. The manuscript was written in the 1960s, but only published later, after his death. Fr. Arcilla, history professor at the Ateneo de Manila University, provides useful background details and annotations. - Prof. Ricardo T.
