He was also treasurer of the American Red Cross in the Philippines. When the Japanese occupied Manila, he and his family were interned in Santo Tomas, where he became chief of the Finance and Supplies Committee. The Japanese and the Philippine Executive Committee (established by the Japanese) met with him since they wanted to separate the Philippine Red Cross from the American Red Cross. This and other issues are discussed in Bailey’s diary, which commenced on December 8, 1941 and ended in March 16, 1945, when the family returned to the U.S. The editor is the daughter of Fay Cook Bailey, and was also interned in Santo Tomas. She has thoughtfully included several important letters and reports (including one he made to his bank just after the war) in this volume, which add to the importance of this book. The title of the book comes from the common belief that the war last only a matter of days; for the Baileys, it lasted for over three years. - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose
