Proud and unused to army life, he was a recalcitrant sergeant who did not follow orders, but eventually learned to fit in with the advent of war. Assigned to the 31st Division, Philippine Army, he was a driver with the division motor pool, and served in Zambales and Bataan. With Bataan’s surrender, he became a prisoner of war and participated in the Death March. In prison camp, he was conscripted by the Japanese to drive trucks, before he was released. While driving a truck he was ordered by a Japanese soldier, he got into an accident and the Japanese was killed. Alabado was not charged for killing the soldier, he was eventually released from camp. Although his life under the Japanese was difficult, he considers the post-war failure of the US to recognize Filipino veterans as more painful. - Prof. Ricardo T.
