He was an eyewitness to the bombing of the field on the first day of the war, and subsequently saw action in Bataan. Like many survivors of the Death March and Japanese prison camps, Bilek tried to shut out the horrible memories of captivity, but realized that by doing so he was depriving his family and the world of his own unique experiences. Forty years after the war, he decided to write this memoir, which he completed and published almost twenty years later. Despite the distance of two decades, Bilek’s memory is clear and the narrative smooth. - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose
