This book is a series of accounts, from May 1941 to October 1945, describing the author’s service on the island of Cebu in the Philippines, and his subsequent capture and imprisonment by Japanese forces. - Roderick HallLanguage/Translation Info: EnglishSummary: A personal account from a different perspective: the author (assisted by his son) writes about his experiences as a reserve officer called to active duty and sent to the Philippines just prior to the outbreak of war. He was assigned to Bohol and Cebu, and saw the war from that perspective. Ordered to surrender after the fall of Corregidor, he was jailed in the Cebu City jail, and later transferred to Davao. He narrates his ordeals under the Japanese, in particular the notorious hell ship, the Oryoku Maru. He survived the ship’s sinking, transfer to two other hell ships, and forced labor in Fukuoka, Japan. Miner was interviewed by prosecutors at the war crimes trial of the Japanese responsible for the Oryoku Maru tragedy; his testimony, as well as excerpts of his POW diary, are printed in the book. This book was printed in a revised edition (with some additions) by Giraffe Books in the Philippines, under the title "In the Shadow of the Rising Sun: Diary of an American POW in WWII." - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose
